Welcome to Leading Out Loud
5 minute read
Welcome to my new Website and blog. I'm happy you're here. Its a daunting task to take on a new blog in 2017 amidst all the noise out there. As I've considered this project I've been pondering, "How do I separate signal from noise?"
Ready for the response? Be myself. Yikes!
I don't know about you, but many people I speak with have had their lives turned around lately. Whether its a job transition, the uncertainty of the outer politic, family illness or simply watching the young ones grow and evolve in an increasingly speedy and tech-driven world.
A sudden change in my family, confronted me this summer and catapulted me into clarity. Sometimes clarity comes from having your back up against the wall, with no way out; forced to rely on what is truly yours. When the stakes are high and when what you've relied on in the past for strength and steadiness suddenly disappears, the next step becomes the new rock to stand on.
One of the nuggets that came clear in the discomfort, was how I want to play in the Learning and Development (L&D) space. One of my last projects moved me in a profound way. My team and I worked to develop an emotional intelligence program for leaders. Essentially, we added structure to an existing program and linked outcomes to on-the-job behaviors so results of the development were more easily identified and linked to people's jobs.
That said, it was one of the most authentic and whole-person leadership development programs I had been exposed to in business. Twice, observing the original sessions a tear came to my eye. I was touched and moved by the leaders' courage to share their deeper selves, in a community where they also had to earn a living and navigate politics. The evident compassion from the coaches (leaders themselves) to the leaders in the group was a powerful motivator and trust builder.
I walked away from this experience thinking, "How can I do more of this kind of work?" In a business landscape where effective leaders must navigate the difficult job of managing complexity, while driving organizational alignment and culture, and engaging a widely diverse workforce, emotional intelligence is paramount. And, you can't get to emotional fortitude without involving the whole self.
What would our world be like if all our companies allowed for a whole-person model that fostered authentic leadership?
My intention is to explore this question "out loud." Isn't that what social media is all about today. I promise not to publish what I had for dinner. I want to explore how we can empower our leaders with more authenticity, whole-person learning, emotional saavy combined with business smarts. As I like to say, "The soft skills are the hard skills."
I'm also going to bring what I know and have learned through these turbulent times. The world is changing and so is the world of L&D. Let's get ready together.
My plan is to throw up ideas for folks to react and respond to. I welcome the dialogue, the push-back, the feedback and the various perspectives. I can also see the conversation growing into a community of practice or a MasterMind group. There is wisdom in the collective.
Your thoughts are welcome.
